Spirulina are planktonic blue green algae that grows naturally in warm alkaline lakes in subtropical and tropical areas. The inclusion of Spirulina to companion animal pet foods offers many health promoting benefits.
Spirulina has been recognized as having a unique nutritional profile with a very high 60–70% of dry matter protein content, and being rich in vitamins, minerals, essential fatty acids, as well as other bioactive components.
Spirulina's super protein, C-phycocyanin, has many biological functions such as anti-oxidation, anti-inflammatory, anti-tumor, improving immunity, and preventing organ injury.
Our 9-month-old pup Zeus, pictured here, is living proof of the power of spirulina. He’s developed an exceptionally muscular, well-defined physique since starting daily spirulina supplementation. His coat is glossier, his energy is boundless and his recovery after play is noticeably faster. Zeus thrives on PUREMIX and the results speak for themselves.

PAWERSNACKS performed several rounds of in-house testing on the PUREMIX pack, in collaboration with Dr. Ioannis Tzovenis, PhD.
This included serving different portions to a pack of dogs of different ages, genders, sizes and breeds. The results were uniform after each round as the test subjects showed no side effects, but actually exhibited increased energy levels. The dogs were visibly attracted to the spirulina servings every single time and ignored treats, meat and bones as they preferred the spirulina.
During an unforeseen mishap, one night the pack had managed to get their paws on a box containing 36 bottles of spirulina, for an equivalent of 2 kilograms or 4.5 pounds of biomass. The next morning, 36 empty bottles were found strewn across the PUREMIX office. In the hours and days that followed, aside from a bit of green but normal-shaped stool, no side effects were noted. This was an unintended first hand account and proof of the zero toxicity findings published about spirulina.
The PUREMIX farm performs quality tests on every single batch of biomass to assure the quality levels are met. In addition to the PUREMIX testing, the following details provide more insight into the health benefits of spirulina for dogs.

“...diets supplemented with Spirulina significantly enhanced immune response and gut health in dogs.” – Satyaraj E, Reynolds A, Engler R, Labuda J, Sun P. Supplementation of Diets With Spirulina Influences Immune and Gut Function in Dogs. Front Nutr. 2021 May 28;8:667072. Zhang HQ, Lin AP, Sun Y, Deng YM. Chemo - and radio-protective effects of polysaccharide of Spirulina platensis on hemopoietic system of mice and dogs. Acta Pharmacol Sin. 2001 Dec;22(12):1121-4.
Improved vitality - by helping balance and stabilize the immune system, it frees up more metabolic energy for vitality. Spirulina possesses antibacterial properties, including activity against Staphylococcus aureus MTCC 96, Salmonella typhimurium MTCC 98, Escherichia coli MTCC 443, Pseudomo-16 K. Kazimierska, J. Kępińska-Pacelik, W. Biel nas aeruginosa MTCC 424, and Proteus vulgaris MTCC 426 (Bhowmik et al. 2009; Kumar et al. 2011).
“Spirulina has been amply reported in the literature to offer a valid support to the health of human skin and can thus be applied in the field of cosmetics [58]. In particular, A. Platensis has been shown to provide considerable benefits for the fibers composing the hair, making them brighter and easier to comb [59]. The benefits that Spirulina brings to the health of skin appendages probably derive from its rich nutritional profile because it has been shown that foods rich in antioxidants and omega-6 fatty acids can promote the protection of hair from oxidative stress derived from exposure to UV rays and environmental pollutants, improving shine and counteracting fall [60,61]. Furthermore, the excellent amino acid profile of the protein contained in A. Platensis may favor the composition of keratin of which human and animal hair are made. Other parameters evaluated in this study were scratching and lacrimation. Any variations in their manifestation are among the easiest signs for owners to notice; no significant variation between times was found in relation to these parameters.” – Stefanutti D, Tonin G, Morelli G, Zampieri RM, La Rocca N, Ricci R. Oral Palatability and Owners’ Perception of the Effect of Increasing Amounts of Spirulina (Arthrospira platensis) in the Diet of a Cohort of Healthy Dogs and Cats. Animals. 2023; 13(8):1275.
