PUREMIX SPIRULINA

Spirulina are planktonic blue green algae that grows naturally in warm alkaline lakes in subtropical and tropical areas. The inclusion of Spirulina to companion animal pet foods offers many health promoting benefits.

KEY BENEFITS

Superfood

Spirulina has been recognized as having a unique nutritional profile with a very high 60–70% of dry matter protein content, and being rich in vitamins, minerals, essential fatty acids, as well as other bioactive components.

Super Protein

Spirulina's super protein, C-phycocyanin, has many biological functions such as anti-oxidation, anti-inflammatory, anti-tumor, improving immunity, and preventing organ injury.

Super Pups

Our 9-month-old pup Zeus, pictured here, is living proof of the power of spirulina. He’s developed an exceptionally muscular, well-defined physique since starting daily spirulina supplementation. His coat is glossier, his energy is boundless and his recovery after play is noticeably faster. Zeus thrives on PUREMIX and the results speak for themselves.

Technical Efficacy

PAWERSNACKS performed several rounds of in-house testing on the PUREMIX pack, in collaboration with Dr. Ioannis Tzovenis, PhD.

This included serving different portions to a pack of dogs of different ages, genders, sizes and breeds. The results were uniform after each round as the test subjects showed no side effects, but actually exhibited increased energy levels. The dogs were visibly attracted to the spirulina servings every single time and ignored treats, meat and bones as they preferred the spirulina.

During an unforeseen mishap, one night the pack had managed to get their paws on a box containing 36 bottles of spirulina, for an equivalent of 2 kilograms or 4.5 pounds of biomass. The next morning, 36 empty bottles were found strewn across the PUREMIX office. In the hours and days that followed, aside from a bit of green but normal-shaped stool, no side effects were noted. This was an unintended first hand account and proof of the zero toxicity findings published about spirulina.

Safety Testing

The PUREMIX farm performs quality tests on every single batch of biomass to assure the quality levels are met. In addition to the PUREMIX testing, the following details provide more insight into the health benefits of spirulina for dogs.

  • It has been demonstrated that Spirulina promotes the growth of lactic acid bacteria, which are classified as probiotic organisms and help maintain a balance between harmful and beneficial microorganisms in the gastrointestinal tract, thereby improving intestinal absorption (Bhowmik et al. 2009).
  • The positive impact of Spirulina supplementation in the diet of dogs on gut microbiota can be observed after just one month of use (Delsante et al. 2022). Supplementing dogs’ diets with Spirulina at a concentration of 0.2% has a prebiotic effect on the stability of gut flora in dogs, resulting in an improved immune response (Satyaraj et al. 2021). It has also been demonstrated in laboratory animals that Spirulina supplementation at a concentration of 3% in a high-fat diet for three months inhibits chronic inflammation, gut dysbiosis, and modulates intestinal permeability (Yu et al. 2020).
  • Spirulina also exhibits prebiotic properties and modulates the microflora of the gastrointestinal tract (Patel et al. 2021)

  • Products containing Spirulina are also used as supportive treatment for skin problems. GLA contributes to the reconstruction and protection of the skin’s barrier layer, protects the skin from infections, and alleviates inflammation. Additionally, it soothes irritations, redness, and counteracts dryness and scaling of the skin. Clinical studies in atopic dogs have shown positive effects of diet enrichment with a combination of EPA, DHA, and GLA (Abba et al. 2005). Significant improvement was observed in animals with early signs of atopy compared to those with chronic atopy. In dogs with atopic dermatitis, disturbances in the structure of extracellular lipid lamellae have been found, as they are thinner and not continuously arranged (Piekutowska et al. 2008). As a result, wounds and injuries heal more slowly in these animals, and penetration of allergens and other irritating substances is facilitated. Topical application of Spirulina has been found to accelerate wound healing and may be used for the treatment of various skin wounds, potentially providing a molecular basis for future promising scar-reducing agents (Elbialy et al. 2021).

“Spirulina has been amply reported in the literature to offer a valid support to the health of human skin and can thus be applied in the field of cosmetics [58]. In particular, A. Platensis has been shown to provide considerable benefits for the fibers composing the hair, making them brighter and easier to comb [59]. The benefits that Spirulina brings to the health of skin appendages probably derive from its rich nutritional profile because it has been shown that foods rich in antioxidants and omega-6 fatty acids can promote the protection of hair from oxidative stress derived from exposure to UV rays and environmental pollutants, improving shine and counteracting fall [60,61]. Furthermore, the excellent amino acid profile of the protein contained in A. Platensis may favor the composition of keratin of which human and animal hair are made. Other parameters evaluated in this study were scratching and lacrimation. Any variations in their manifestation are among the easiest signs for owners to notice; no significant variation between times was found in relation to these parameters.”  – Stefanutti D, Tonin G, Morelli G, Zampieri RM, La Rocca N, Ricci R. • A recent study on 60 dogs showed that after the first 2 weeks of this study using the starting amount of Spirulina, ~97% (n = 58/60) of owners said that administering Spirulina to their dog did not cause any problems, while 2 owners (3.3%) discontinued the supplementation because in 1 case the dog experienced diarrhea and 1 vomiting that continued even after supplementation was discontinued – so was probably unrelated… no change was detected in fecal score among periods (p = 0.669)  – Stefanutti D, Tonin G, Morelli G, Zampieri RM, La Rocca N, Ricci R. • The type of spirulina we use, A. platensis, is safe as it does not produce any cyanotoxin:  “Moreover, while A. platensis does not produce any cyanotoxin, other species of cyanobacteria that proliferate in the same environmental conditions may synthesize hepatoxic and neurotoxic agents” – Cheung, M.Y., Liang, S. & Lee, J.
